Ancient Civilizations Unit Study
Every ancient empire solved the same four problems. Your student will solve them too.
Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus Valley, and ancient China, studied side by side rather than one after another. Students compare how each handled water, food, writing, law, and defense, then apply the same four problems to their own nation.

- What problem does writing solve for a growing society?
- How does a law code change daily life?
- What causes a long-lived civilization to fall?

1. Mesopotamia
Irrigation, cuneiform, ziggurats, and the Code of Hammurabi.
2. Ancient Egypt
The Nile's flood cycle, pharaohs, hieroglyphs, and monumental building.
3. Indus Valley
City planning, drainage, trade, and an undeciphered script.
4. Ancient China
Dynastic cycles, bronze, silk, and the Mandate of Heaven.
5. Compare and contrast
A four-column comparison across government, writing, religion, and economy.
6. Apply it
Identify which ancient solution your own nation most resembles and why.
