The Story Behind SFC Nations: From Strategy Game to Homeschool Movement

The founder's story of SFC Nations — how a persistent nation-building strategy game grew into Homeschool Nations, a full education platform where children learn civics, economics, and geography by running their own country.

    TL;DR

SFC Nations began as a persistent nation-simulation game in the tradition of the classic browser strategy era. Watching young players teach themselves taxation, diplomacy, and government types faster than any textbook could, we rebuilt it into an education platform — and Homeschool Nations was born.

It started with a game we loved

SFC Nations was born from a simple conviction: the old browser nation-simulation games of the 2000s were some of the best accidental teachers ever built. Players who could not sit through a civics class were voluntarily learning tax policy, trade negotiation, and alliance politics — because their nation depended on it.

We set out to build that experience properly: one nation per player, real 24-hour time, a persistent world that never resets. Your nation on day 400 carries every decision you made on day 1. That permanence is what makes the learning real.

    The moment everything changed

As the game grew, a pattern emerged in how young players talked about it. They were not using game language. They were using economics language. They asked why their citizens were unhappy under one government type and not another. They calculated tax income against military maintenance without being asked to.

Parents noticed too. Homeschool families started using the game as their social studies backbone — and telling us it was working better than the curriculum they had paid for. That was the moment SFC Nations stopped being just a game in our minds.

    Building Homeschool Nations

We rebuilt the platform around education deliberately. Nine subject curriculum tracks — from Economics & Financial Literacy to Civics & Government to World History — each anchored to things students actually do in the game.

We wrote the 12-chapter Homeschool Nations book, created printable unit studies, sample PDFs for every subject, a Teacher Admin panel for co-ops and classrooms, and a Student Portal so parents and teachers can see real progress.

And we kept the game free to play. One nation, full simulation, no cost. The curriculum is there when families want structure — but the learning starts the moment a child founds a nation.

    What we believe

Children are capable of far more intellectual seriousness than most curriculum gives them credit for. A ten-year-old can weigh a trade deal. A twelve-year-old can defend a form of government. They just need stakes — something of their own on the line.

Education should produce judgment, not just recall. Facts matter, but the goal is a student who can look at a decision, see the tradeoffs, and defend a choice. That is what running a nation, week after week, quietly trains.

And learning should be joyful. Not entertaining-as-bribery, but genuinely absorbing. When a student logs in to collect taxes before breakfast, that is not screen time. That is ownership.

    Where we are going

SFC Nations today is a world of player nations, AI kingdoms, alliances, trade routes, sports leagues, and daily news — and a growing education platform serving homeschool families, co-ops, and classrooms.

The Learning Center you are reading now is the next chapter: a permanent, growing library that helps every parent turn the game their child already loves into the education they need. Thank you for being part of it.
