Why homeschool families use SFC Nations

Every student starts with 1,000 citizens, $1M in the treasury, and a real-world location they pick on a map. From day one they're making the same kinds of decisions a real government makes: how high to set taxes, what to spend on military vs. infrastructure, which trade partners to court, and what kind of government to run. The game runs on real time — one in-game day equals one real day — so it slots naturally into a weekly schedule without becoming an attention sink.

    What students actually learn

Economics: gross income, tax revenue, military maintenance, and why a balanced budget matters. Civics: 20 government types from Democracy to Monarchy to Anarchy, each with different effects on happiness and growth. Geography: pick a real location, see real timezones, trade with nations on different continents. Critical thinking: every choice has a tradeoff. Raise taxes and you fund your army but lose happiness. Stay peaceful and you grow faster but become a target.

How to use it in a homeschool week

Most families treat it as a 15-30 minute daily check-in. Students log in, review what happened, collect taxes (24h cooldown), adjust their plan, and journal one decision and its reasoning. Parents can use the in-game events as writing prompts or as a launchpad into history and government lessons. Teachers and parents can also download free lesson-plan PDFs, a 30-day unit guide, discussion prompts, and rubrics from Teacher Resources.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is it really free?

Yes. The full game is free. Optional small donations unlock cosmetic bonuses but nothing required.

What age range is it for?

Best fit is roughly 11 and up. For younger kids (ages 4-9) we have a free Kids Number Games page with counting, missing-number, and simple addition puzzles.

Do teachers need to download lesson plans?

They do not have to, but they can. SFC Nations works as a game on its own, and the Teacher Resources page adds free PDFs for structured civics, economics, geography, journaling, and assessment.

Is there any gambling or violence?

No gambling outside an opt-in casual arcade section. Wars are abstract numeric battles with no graphic imagery.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs in any modern browser on desktop, tablet, or phone.

    Ready to build your nation?

Free to play. No credit card. One nation per player.

    Why SFC Nations works differently

Most curriculum runs lesson, worksheet, questions, answer key. Ours runs Learn, Explore, Create, Make Decisions, Apply — because the student has a nation to run. Read the full argument, download the PDF, and grab five free lessons.
